Dominican Star Journalists Win Awards at Press Association Conference

Staff of the Dominican Star student newspaper took home seven awards at the Illinois College Press Association conference held Feb. 16-17 in downtown Chicago.

The staff submitted some of their best work from 2023 and competed against submissions from 11 other Illinois college newspapers in the small school division.

Winners included Betsy Carreño, 1st and 2nd place for Entertainment/Culture Podcasting; Itzel Chavero, 3rd place for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Coverage; Angel Dominguez, 3rd Place for Sports Game Story and honorable mention for Sports News; Matt Galdi, 3rd place for Sports News Story; and Julian Gutierrez, 3rd place for Feature Photos.

During the conference, students learned about everything from investigative reporting to social media management, and shared insights with roughly 240 other college journalists from around the state.

At the SI Expo on April 10, the Dominican Star staff will share what they learned at the conference and how they will apply it to their work at Dominican.
