Davlin Diversity Leadership Award Presented to Director of University Ministry
Andrew Mercado, director of University Ministry and adjunct instructor in the Core Curriculum, is the recipient of the 2026 Sr. Mary Clemente Davlin Diversity Leadership Award from Dominican University.
Presented annually, the Davlin Award recognizes a DU faculty or staff member whose teaching, programming or service demonstrates a sustained commitment to antiracist and equitable practices and helps cultivate a more inclusive university community.
Mercado was presented with the honor during the 2026 Convocation ceremony on Sept. 3. He was selected for the award based on his dedication to culturally responsive ministry, holistic student formation and creating spaces where students can explore the connections among spirituality, identity, justice and vocation.
“His work ensures that students, particularly those from historically underrepresented communities, feel seen, supported and empowered to bring their full identities and gifts to our community,” the Office of Justice, Equity and Inclusion said.
As a first-generation college graduate with Colombian and Puerto Rican roots, Mercado brings to his work his lived experience and a deep commitment to access and equity. Through University Ministry, he has strengthened cultural celebrations such as Las Posadas, Día de los Muertos and the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He has also expanded interfaith engagement and created meaningful opportunities for students to build community, reflect on their purpose and engage Dominican’s mission.
Mercado’s contributions extend beyond campus through his involvement with the PASOS Network, which advances culturally responsive ministry in Catholic higher education. In 2025, he received the Rev. Charles Forsyth Award from the Catholic Campus Ministry Association for outstanding leadership and excellence in campus ministry.
“Andrew understands that belonging is not simply about welcoming students into spaces that already exist,” said Dr. Precious Porras, chief diversity officer at Dominican University. “It is about transforming those spaces so students can bring their full identities, cultures, questions and gifts with them. His ministry is grounded in relationship, accompaniment and an unwavering belief in the dignity and potential of every student. Andrew does not simply speak about Dominican’s mission. He brings it to life.”
During his Convocation address, Mercado praised the work of others in the DU community in responding to challenges and supporting students.
“I stand here because of the people who have modeled and embodied the meaning of love throughout my life," he said.
