Carys McFaul, a senior biology-chemistry major at Dominican University, was awarded 1st Place in the undergraduate poster competition at the Chicago Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting on Feb. 27.

McFaul presented research she helped to lead in DU's Behavioral Neuroscience Lab, more commonly known as the Slug Lab. This research compared the molecular basis of forgettable versus unforgettable forms of memory.

Since 2010, students in the Slug Lab have been studying memory using Aplysia californica, a type of sea slug.

This is the fifth time a Dominican student has placed in the Chicago Society for Neuroscience competition since DU's neuroscience program began in 2009, noted Dr. Robert Calin-Jageman, the program's director.

Also attending the Chicago Society for Neuroscience Annual Meeting were DU student-researchers Eli Caron, Charles Kasella and Armin Mrzljak, and 2025 graduate Theresa Wilsterman, now a PhD student in Loyola University Chicago’s pharmacology graduate program.
