Another Way to Serve, Learn and Connect
University Ministry’s Alternative Break Immersion Program (ABI) offers students, faculty and staff an opportunity to step beyond campus and dive into the social concerns of today. Driven by Dominican University’s mission of participating in the creation of a more just and humane world, the program provides opportunities to serve and learn—locally, out of state and internationally. It is offered over fall, spring and summer breaks, and students can earn academic credit.
Students who participate in ABI examine social issues, build relationships and engage in life-changing experiences that are only possible away from the classroom and in a team-centered environment. Each experience includes time for prayer and reflection.
Our students have:
- engaged in international service among Mayan communities in Guatemala
- repaired homes and performed farm work in low-income areas of rural West Virginia, New Orleans, and in the U.S./México border communities of San Diego, California and Tijuana, Mexico
- attended the Parliament of the World's Religions in Toronto, Canada to gain a better understanding of global issues and begin thinking creatively about ways to make change
- examined food justice efforts up close through visits to urban farms and food pantries
New opportunities are available annually. Contact University Ministry at ministry@dom.edu to learn more.
