Kate Brown '13

In 2010, Kate Brown ’13 transferred to Dominican University from Harper College in Palatine, Illinois. Kate was looking for a K-12 art program and Dominican had it. Plus the university transferred the most credit courses out of any school she looked at.



“After visiting various universities in the Chicagoland area I chose Dominican for two reasons: One, because it had the combination of programs that would allow me to pursue my three majors and a minor, and two, it enabled me to financially achieve the education I desired,” Kate says.

Kate is the first transfer student to be awarded Dominican’s Alice Welsh Skilling Scholarship for freshmen and transfer students majoring in visual arts. She is majoring in sculpture, painting and K-12 education and minoring in art history. She says that by keeping the studies in separate majors, you end up taking more classes but feels a student is better prepared for the real world and has more options by doing it that way.

When she’s not in class or studying, Kate is working at the Kaleidoscope Art School in Barrington, Illinois. She works full time during the summer and part time during the school year. When she was only six, she started at Kaleidoscope as a student taking art classes. She took classes all through junior high and high school, and when she graduated they offered her a job. At Kaleidoscope, she says she has been able to put into practice the skills and knowledge she has gained from her Dominican education courses. In return, her work at Kaleidoscope has also informed her classwork.

“My courses at Dominican have taught me how to deal with kids with disabilities," she says. "So when I have a student at Kaleidoscope, I feel I now have the skills to help them.”

Kate says she hopes to one day open a school for art of her own and give kids the same opportunity she had, to explore her creativity and passion.
