Two years ago, North Shore School District 112 launched the first phase of their long-range plan, a project that transformed the old Northwood Middle School into a 21st-century modern learning facility. A principal at Northwood for two years, Sergio Gonzalez MAT ’13, MAEA ’17 said the remodeled campus is “nothing like he’s ever experienced." The modernized school is designed to enhance student-teacher and social-emotional learning.

During construction of the new campus, students were moved to Elm Place Middle School in Highland Park. Amid a year of uncertainty caused by the pandemic, Sergio said operating a school was an unpredictable and meaningful opportunity that took an “all-hands-on-deck approach” to overcome. But he said he found the energy to persevere through faith, family and his staff.

Sergio said welcoming students back feels like the light at the end of a tunnel. He’s “over the moon” imagining what a return to in-person learning paired with a new campus will mean for students.
