Eugene Giudice MLIS ’07 was awarded the Advocate of the Year Award by the Private Law Librarians and Information Professionals Special Interest Section (PLLIP-SIS) of the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL).

This award is made annually to a librarian who demonstrates leadership and excellence in advocating for law libraries and law librarians. This year, Eugene’s name was submitted by Mr. Jim Senter, formerly a law librarian with the Jones Day law firm in their Los Angeles office.

Jim had high praise for Eugene’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in that he has been holding weekly ZOOM coffee breaks with librarians across the United States and internationally to keep the law librarian community connected. Eugene has also been putting out daily inspirational and motivational emails to a distribution of over 200 to offer people hope and a vision for the post-pandemic world. These messages are being collected and published on Amazon in a volume entitled "Reflections During a Pandemic: Thoughts While Sheltering in Place."

Further, in his submission, Jim commented on Eugene’s “strong, contributing presence” on several AALL and PLLIP-SIS committees. In addition to his committee work, Jim noted that Eugene has been the “catalyst and moderator” for several continuing education webinars, most recently on alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and cannabis law, the latter being a live session presented at the 2020 AALL virtual conference.

When asked to comment, Eugene said, “to be honored for one’s work is affirming, but when that honor comes from the colleagues in your profession, it makes it all the more special. This honor is not only for me but a reflection of the community of law libraries that has supported and sustained me in my work. I shall ever endeavor to be a steward of this award and the trust the community has placed in me.”

Eugene’s career as a law librarian has taken him to several law firms, including Schiff Hardin, Baker McKenzie, Latham and Watkins. Currently, Eugene is the Senior Research Services Training Specialist with Dentons US LLP in their Chicago office. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Concordia University, an MBA from DePaul University, and a Master of Library and Information Sciences from Dominican University. Eugene lives with his wife Colleen in Chicago’s Edgebrook neighborhood. In addition to AALL, Eugene is an active member of the Special Libraries Association, the Chicago Association of Law Libraries, the Illinois Library Association, MENSA, the Knights of Columbus and is Librarian in Residence for the Italian American Veterans Museum in Stone Park, Illinois.
