‘It Takes a Village’

The Village is a community-building, relationship-centered enrichment program for Dominican University students. Its mission is to foster retention, persistence and graduation for students from historically marginalized, diasporic backgrounds.

The African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” is the inspiration for the Village’s name. It reflects the need for a network of communal support to become the people we are meant to be. It is only within community that we can discover all that we can do, create and give back.

Through a community of Dominican staff, faculty, students and administrators who are committed to your success, the Village is poised to provide a variety of resources to help you meet your goals. Whether you need tutoring, help honing your interview skills, a letter of recommendation or someone to listen, we are here to help.

The Village provides students:

  • Annual financial stipends
  • A strong support system
  • Peer friendships
  • Leadership development
  • Cultural, social and scholarly engagement
  • Workshops on academic, professional and financial success
  • Help finding on-campus employment or an internship
  • Preparation for life after college
