The School of Information Studies (SOIS) faculty has prepared pathways to a number of different career options with suggested groups of courses from which students may select. Pathways allow individual needs, goals and aspirations to be met. Students are able to focus their study in order to acquire expertise in a specific aspect of the profession. Pathways are not substitutes for faculty advising but rather allow students to easily identify courses that will provide the necessary preparation for different fields within the profession. With the pathways, students can find various routes to their ultimate career goals. Unlike certificates, pathways are not formal specializations and are not noted on transcripts.

Students also have the option of combining the MLIS with a second, separate master's degree from a partnering Dominican program or external partnering institution. Students must apply and be accepted to the programs separately.
