A Single Direction Sparked a Storied Career

Dominican alumna Michelle Agins ’77 was profiled in the New York Times, where she has been a photographer for more than three decades. Agins' work was showcased in a retrospective at the 2021 Photoville Festival in New York.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, Agins captures stories that would otherwise be untold. Her career started when she was a pre-teen and captured a murder in her Chicago neighborhood, making her realize that news photography could provide evidence and tell important stories in Black, working-class communities like her own. 

According to the article, Agins, as one of the first Black photographers at the Times, "served as an emissary for the paper in a way that few Black journalists of previous generations had an opportunity to do."
