Bella Bahhs '14 interviewed Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot as part of a press conference marking her midterm. A community activist working on justice efforts for Black lives, Bahhs wrote a provocative, challenging article in The Triibe about her experience interviewing the mayor. Bahhs asked the mayor to whom she believed she was accountable and which Black Chicago liberation struggles resonate most with her as a Black queer woman mayor. She also asked the mayor about her efforts to help the growing population of Black Chicagoans faced with post-conviction challenges, a personal issue for Lightfoot, given that her brother struggled after his incarceration.

Since 2018, Bahhs has been working with the statewide Women's Justice Task Force to develop recommendations for decarcerating and reducing harm to women and families impacted by the criminal justice system.
