Generous Chicago Tribune readers donated more than $10,000 to help pay off a Dominican student's debt and to help other Dominican students in her situation. Donors were moved by a November 28 article in the Chicago Tribune (by Elyssa Cherney) that featured Dominican student Ximena Castillo who has been financially impacted by COVID-19. Castillo is juggling a full-time course load and a job to help pay her tuition. Her ability to register for spring classes was in jeopardy because her balance was higher than the university's threshold. But readers came to her rescue and her balance was covered. In addition, readers donated funds to help other financially vulnerable students.
