Loudon Wainwright III Pays Tribute To George Gerdes

On February 23rd, in conjunction with The City Winery and Mandolin, Loudon Wainwright III will host a virtual musical tribute to his best friend, the singer-songwriter and actor George Gerdes, who died on New Year’s Day. Gerdes, who released two albums in the seventies ("Obituary" and "Son of Obituary"), could be called the most influential folkie that nobody ever heard of. His reach was wide. Wainwright met him in 1965, when they were both acting students at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Other Carnegie “dramats” at that time included Michael McKean, David Lander, Albert Brooks, and Steven Bochco. Wainwright considers Gerdes “one of the funniest and most moving singer-songwriters out there, and my most crucial influence." Joni Mitchell has called Gerdes’ song “Say So What Else Is New?” "the happiest sad song I’ve ever heard.” Proceeds from the show will go to Judy Johns, Gerdes' partner.

The Tribute includes perfromances by: Richard Thompson, Suzanne Vega, Steve Forbert, Terre Roche, Christopher Guest & Michael McKean & Harry Shearer, Wesley Stace, Jill Sobule, and others.

Presented by Mandolin Events. Dominican University Performing Arts Center receives a percentage of ticket sales.
