First-Year Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR)
Summer SOAR

The first step in your orientation to Dominican University is attending the Summer SOAR program. SOAR has been moved to an exciting virtual format.

SOAR will still take place on the date in which you sign up below. Day one of SOAR will run from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. CST in a live, synchronous, and interactive format. Day two of SOAR will consist of a 1:1 virtual advising appointment with your academic advisor via Zoom. Throughout SOAR, you will still hear all about Dominican, getting involved, planning for your future, and finding a way to make a difference in our world.

Pre-SOAR Assessments

English

You will not need to take an English placement assessment. All students will be enrolled in Dominican’s Critical Reading, Writing, and Speaking 101 class in their first semester to learn more about composition, public speaking, and reading comprehension.

Math

In lieu of taking a mathematics placement exam, your mathematics course placement will be determined by a formula involving your SAT or ACT score. Your specific placement will be shared with you when you meet with your advisor on day two of SOAR. Should you feel that your placement level is not reflective of your mathematical abilities, you can choose to take an in-person placement exam while on campus for Welcome Weekend in the fall.

Modern Foreign Language

If you have previously taken, or are a heritage speaker in, a language in which Dominican offers a proficiency exam (Spanish, Italian, French, or German), you will be invited to take an online proficiency exam that will need to be completed at least one week prior to your SOAR date. Dominican also offers a Polish proficiency exam, but that will take place during Welcome Weekend at the start of the academic year. If you have taken a language that Dominican does not offer or have not taken any foreign languages, you will not need to take a proficiency exam. You will be able to start at the 101 level of any language.

What’s Next?

You should receive an email from the Dominican University Support Center (IT) to set up your network ID and password within 24 hours of signing up for SOAR. Once you receive this email, please create your account as soon as you can to be able to access Canvas, Dominican’s learning management system.

Welcome Weekend

The second step of your orientation is Welcome Weekend. Welcome Weekend builds on your experience at SOAR and provides additional information and resources for you and your family to help you succeed at Dominican, and welcome both you and your family to the Dominican community. Save the date for Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30. You will receive additional information about registering for Welcome Weekend in the mail over the summer.

IMPORTANT: The university will send all communications regarding SOAR (confirmation, assessment login and password information, etc.) to the email address you provided when you applied to Dominican.
