For incoming first-year students, SOAR will take place on campus on Tuesdays from June through August in an exciting and safe one-day orientation program. Choose the date that works best for you! If you are joining Dominican from out-out-state or have a medical accommodation that prevents you from attending SOAR in person, please check out the "New Student Virtual SOAR Dates" below.

SOAR programs will begin at 9 a.m. CST with a check in and welcome session. After learning about Dominican history and getting acclimated to the campus community, you will meet other incoming students and your TORCH (orientation) Leaders. These current students will guide you throughout your orientation experience. You will learn about the different core curricula options at Dominican and prepare for your advising session. After lunch, you'll spend the afternoon registering for classes, learning about Dominican's commitment to diversity and equity, and hearing from important campus partners such as Career Development, Student Life, and University Ministry.

Pre-SOAR Assessments

You will not need to take an English placement assessment. All students will be enrolled in Dominican’s Critical Reading, Writing, and Speaking 101 class in their first semester to learn more about composition, public speaking, and reading comprehension.

Information regarding Dominican's mathematics assessment will be released in May 2021. There is nothing for you to do now. Once you sign up for SOAR, we will send you updates regarding your assessment.

If you have previously taken, or are a heritage speaker in Spanish, Italian, French, or German you will be invited to take an online proficiency exam that will need to be completed at least one week prior to your SOAR date. Dominican also offers a Polish proficiency exam, which will take place at the start of the academic year during Welcome Weekend. If you have taken a language that Dominican does not offer or have not taken any foreign languages, you will not need to take a proficiency exam. You will be able to start at the beginner level of any language.

What’s Next?

Once you have paid your tuition deposit and registered for SOAR, you'll receive an email approximately two weeks before your scheduled program. This email will have information about how to take your academic assessments, what to bring to SOAR, how to upload your ID picture, and much more!

Welcome Weekend

The second step of your orientation is Welcome Weekend. This event builds on your experience at SOAR, provides additional information and resources to help you succeed at Dominican, and welcomes you and your family to the Dominican community. Save the date for Friday, August 27 through Sunday, August 29. You will receive additional information about registering for Welcome Weekend over the summer.
