Degree Requirements

To be admitted to the program, applicants must have previously completed 30 college credits or must receive a waiver (pdf) from the dean of the College of Applied Social Sciences. Those 30 hours can be applied to general elective requirements.

The Bachelor of Professional Studies in Human Services requires 120 credit hours in the following areas:

General Education Requirements (21 hours)
  • SPCS 200 Adult Learning Seminar (3)
  • Social Science (6)
  • Natural Science (6)
  • Humanities (6)
Proficiency Requirements (9 hours)
  • EN 102 Composition II (3) or equivalent
  • MT 150 Contemporary Math or HS 302 Statistics for Social Scientists (3) or equivalent
  • Religion elective (3)
Human Services Requirements (42 hours)
  • HS 300 Social Science Research
  • HS 301 Writing in the Social Sciences
  • HS 302 Statistics for Social Scientists
  • HS 303 Human Services Administration
  • HS 304 Social Policy
  • HS 305 Behavioral Theory
  • HS 400 Professional Ethics
  • Human Services Electives (21 hours). Up to three 200-level social science courses can, with the approval of the program director-be applied to this requirement.
General Electives (48 hours)

Additional course work is necessary to bring the total credit for the degree to 120 hours. Up to 6 credit hours of graduate work may be applied to the BHS degree in the elective category, specifically MCR 601 Mediation Skills Training and MCR 607 Negotiation. These courses will also apply to the respective graduate degree, thereby reducing by 6 credit hours the total number of credit hours required to complete both degrees. Students must have senior standing in the BHS program and must obtain the consent of the program director/college dean to take classes from a graduate program. Concentrations

A student may declare their pursuit of up to two concentrations. When a student has completed the requirements for more than two concentrations, the student must indicate in their declaration, which two will be recognized by the college with a certificate upon graduation. Concentration courses apply to the human services elective requirement and may include courses that have the LS prefix.

Sustainability Studies

Complete the following three courses:

  • LS 345 Environmental Law
Training and Development

Complete the following three courses:

  • HS 390 Adult Learning Theory
  • HS 391 Organizational Development
  • HS 392 Distance Learning
Additional Requirements
  • Each student must complete a minimum of 30 semester credit hours of undergraduate credit in the Dominican University Human Services program.
  • Each student must attain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Each student must file an application for graduation with the Office of the Registrar by the deadline posted for the semester in which the student anticipates completing the degree requirements.
