The charge of the President’s Advisory Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is as follows:

  • Help create and maintain a campus that is fair, responsive and inclusive of all students
  • Work collaboratively to identify and address the concerns of students who are under-represented or marginalized by injustices in the broader society
  • Advise the President on the implementation of fair policies and practices
  • As appropriate, in collaboration with the diversity governance committees, contribute to and review recommendations from the University Diversity Plan
  • Hold University leadership accountable for remedying cultural insensitivity and social justice on campus
Objectives

The Council will address specifically, the following issues raised by the Silence No More student protest:

1. Require each school to develop/implement an annual Diversity Operational Plan

  • Office of the President and Senior Leadership Team endorse Equity and Inclusive Excellence as a key Strategic Commitment for the 2016–2017 Strategic Planning cycle
  • Office of the Provost will work through the Deans of each school to establish guidance that addresses diversity within each academic program
  • Climate, Equity, and Inclusion Committee vetting campus climate survey

2. Institute sustained cultural competency training for administrators, faculty, staff, and students

  • Staff Committee for Inclusion will pilot a diversity certificate to enhance staff competencies.
  • The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) will work with the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) and Diversity Committee to explore this idea as template for faculty development

3. Ensure intentional recruitment of African American administrators, faculty, staff and students

  • Office of the Provost, Diversity Committee, University Ministry, and underrepresented faculty edit the Dominican University Toolkit for Faculty and Academic Affairs Search Committees; Training for faculty committees took place in 2014–2015 academic year.
  • Office of the Provost and ODEI develop hiring procedures, professional development meetings and web-based support to reinforce best practices in hiring diverse faculty
  • Office of the Provost and CTLE is developing a faculty mentoring program to aid in faculty retention
  • Resources Working Group developing a comprehensive enrollment strategy

4. Increase infusion of multiculturalism across the curriculum

  • Diversity Committee spearheaded the revision of the multicultural education requirement on campus; more robust criteria for course approval is being developed
  • Diversity Committee, CTLE, and ODEI working to develop a project on inclusive teaching

5. Ensure accountability of cultural competency training and other recommendations by linking them to faculty, staff, and administrative performance review processes

  • President’s Cabinet, Academic Alignment Working Group, Dean Team, Faculty Interest and President’s Advisory Council on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will develop an action plan to implement this recommendation

6. Annually publish residence life statistical data on student sanctions

  • Dean of Students is developing a template for annually reporting and analyzing sanctions data
