Student Health Insurance Policy: Important Changes at Dominican University

The Affordable Care Act requires nearly everyone to purchase health insurance or be subject to penalties. While we strongly recommend that students have health insurance, due to rising health care costs Dominican University will not offer a student health plan for the current academic years. Students will no longer be automatically enrolled in a health plan.

For newly uninsured students: If you aged out of Medicaid (Kids Care) at 19, and are low income you may be eligible on your own. The Wellness Center can refer you to an area clinic to apply.  If you were terminated from family or employer coverage, you may be eligible to enter the health care marketplace mid-year. Contact AIP at 1-800-452-5772 for the individual insurance options that are available to you. They can help you access all your options, including marketplace subsidies. Otherwise, AIP can help you find an affordable and quality temporary plan until the Healthcare Marketplace opens for January coverage.

For uninsured, full time domestic students: In collaboration with Associated Insurance Plans, the Wellness Center will help undergraduate and graduate students find affordable individual health insurance plans through AIP student insurance. Medicaid is also a good option for low income students (Under 16,000/yr) Please make an appointment with Elizabeth Ritzman, who can help you more quickly enroll in Illinois Medicaid.

For International F1, J1 visa students: International students with a F1 or J1 visa are required to have health insurance by the US State Department as a condition of their visa. The International Health Plan will meet this requirement and costs $65 per month for academic year. You can enroll by contacting the Wellness Center or AIP at 1800-452-5772. International Students can also waive this requirement using their existing insurance if it is equivalent. Please go to www.dominicaninsurance.com  for more information.

For full time DACA or undocumented students: The International Health Plan is available to you and costs $65 per month for academic year. You can enroll by contacting the Wellness Center or AIP at 1800-452-5772.

Dominican will continue to provide limited accident insurance for all students.

If you have any questions, please call Dominican University’s customer service team at (800) 452-5772 for assistance.
