Louder Than a Bomb is a documentary that shares the confounding stories of four Chicago-area high school poetry teams as they prepare for and compete in the world’s largest poetry youth slam. This documentary has won fifteen festival prizes and has been selected for the American Documentary Showcase, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs to “ cultivate greater understanding among people around the world.”
Guest speakers:
  • Lamar from Steinmetz, one of the poets in the film
  • Peter Kahn from OPRF one of the teachers in the film
  • Greg Jacobs/Jon Siskel producers/directors of LTAB
  • Marlena Ceballos, current Dominican University student and one of the poets in the film

Deborah Meier

Deborah Meier, currently at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education as a senior scholar, has spent more than four decades working in public education as a teacher, writer, and public advocate. Known for the schools that she has helped create that are considered exemplars of reform, Deborah Meier encourages new approaches that enhance democracy and equity in public education.

Books by Deborah Meier will be for sale in the lobby.

Waiting For Superman

This award-winning documentary shares the compelling story of five students and is a call for reform, addressing the issues, challenges and opportunities facing America’s schools. Immediately following the movie, Dr. Charles M. Payne, professor at the University of Chicago, who currently serves on the advisory board for the Teacher College Press’ series on social justice and is among the founders of the Education for Liberation Network that encourages young people to think critically about social issues, will provide commentary on the movie.

Honoring the Profession
