Teaching with Primary Sources

For the past 7 years, Dominican University has been a member of the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities’ Teaching with Primary Sources grant project. The goal of the grant project is to provide academic coursework and professional development about the use of primary sources to pre-service teachers and practicing K-12 classroom teachers.

At Dominican, the use of digitized primary sources has been embedded throughout courses offered in the School of Education. Pre-service teachers preparing for certification at Dominican learn how to access the digitized primary sources located on the Library of Congress website and they explore a variety of ways for integrating these sources into their teaching. Candidates also learn various instructional strategies that aid students with disabilities and English language learners in their use of primary sources.
