Undergraduate Teacher Education Program

Undergraduate students wishing to pursue certification must formally apply to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) during or immediately after EDUC/ECED 200, Foundations of Education. Students may not register for or take professional education courses beyond EDUC 310 (elementary & secondary) and ECED 300 or 301 (early childhood) until they have been formally accepted into the TEP.

Acceptance decisions are made by the Teacher Education Program Committee three times during the year. Applications are due by Sept. 15, Jan. 15, and May 15. A letter about acceptance will be sent to students within two weeks of these deadlines. Once accepted into the TEP, students become candidates for certification.

The following criteria must be met for acceptance into the Teacher Education Program:
  • A grade of C or higher in EDUC or ECED 200
  • A passing score on the Illinois Certification System Test of Basic Skills (see Basic Skills Test under Teacher Certification below)
  • An overall grade point average of 2.75. (NOTE: Candidates with overall GPAs below 2.75 but above 2.5 may be accepted conditionally into the program.)
  • A signed disposition commitment form.
  • A completed application including a personal statement of intent and a signed felony form (IL 21-1). Click here for the application form.
