Caritas et Veritas Symposium
Call for Papers: Caritas et Veritas Symposium
“What is the meaning of Caritas et Veritas for Dominican University in the 21st century?”
Dominican University invites faculty, staff, alumnae/i, and members of our sponsoring Sinsinawa Dominican community to ponder and explore this question from the perspectives of their disciplines, professional lives, personal convictions, and unique experiences and join the university community in a sustained, ever-expanding conversation about love and truth.
On November 3, 2009, a faculty panel of Peter Alonzi (economics), Germaine Goetz Sota (communication and theatre arts), Marci Hermesdorf, OP (English), Michelle Martin (social work), and David Perry (history) were the first voices to be heard in an exciting, university-wide conversation addressing our motto, Caritas et Veritas, its meaning and its relationship to our mission. We hope to sustain and expand this conversation over the next two years.
In Fall 2010 The Caritas et Veritas Symposium will gather the university community for plenary addresses, panels, workshops, worship, and communal celebration. The symposium will take place September 28, 2010.
We now invite Dominican University to submit proposals for inclusion in the symposium, approaching the motto from the perspective of your particular discipline or area of professional responsibility. Proposals for formal papers, panel presentations, round-table discussions, workshops, and original creative work, particularly in the visual, performing and other arts are all encouraged. In order to design a balanced symposium accommodating as many of the best proposals as possible, the planning committee may ask some individuals to adapt their preferred presentation formats to fit the shape of the program as a whole. Flexibility and a collaborative spirit will be valued. Proposals should address the following questions:
- How does our motto of Caritas et Veritas affect our lives as educators?
- What does the pursuit of truth mean in your discipline or professional life?
- What’s love got to do with it?
Please submit proposals by March 19, 2010. Questions may be directed to Sr. Diane Kennedy, OP, vice president for Mission and Ministry, dkennedy@dom.edu or (708) 524-6860; or Claire Noonan, director of the Siena Center, cnoonan@dom.edu or (708) 714-9107.
