MACBETH By William Shakespeare Adapted and directed by Krista Hansen November 13, 14, 15, 2009 :: Lund Auditorium Friday, Saturday :: 7:30 p.m. Sunday :: 3:00 p.m. Macbeth, a 400-year old story of temptation and ambition, is being revamped in a modern way by Dominican University’s Performing Arts Center. The original text explores these ideas in the context of ancient Scotland, but DU’s new approach, adapted by theatre professor Krista Hansen, presents a fast-paced, current-day, city spin on the struggle for power and the journey of greed. Just like any major city, the modern setting comes with its share of gangs and territory battles, offering a glimpse into the world of guns, drugs and human trafficking. Consequently, the production allows an audience to examine the realities of urban life, including grief, violence and the homeless. This modern look, which still uses Shakespeare’s language, bridges the history of the play with the importance of its themes. While the text is aged, the ideas are still palpably relevant. |
