Without a full-time employee to handle a/v for the company, Hubbard Street is relying on the expertise of the GSLIS to make their archives usable.

Dominican University hosted its second annual Caritas Veritas Symposium, where faculty, staff, students, trustees and alumnae/i explored how truth and love lead to action for "the creation of a more just and humane world." More than 1,200 members of the campus community attended 40 presentations featuring more than 150 speakers.

Dominican University welcomed new and returning students to campus with DU Fest, a BBQ and party featuring music, fun, games and booths to help students kick the school year off right. Dominican Undergraduate Summer Scholar Program 2011 (3:48)

Three Dominican students from different fields of study discuss the research they conducted in the Undergraduate Summer Scholar Program. The program offers undergraduates a $2,000 stipend and a tuition waiver for three academic credits to conduct research over the summer. Sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Investigations, the program offers undergraduates the opportunity to pursue intensive research often reserved for graduate students at other institutions.

Dominican students participate in service learning trip to Montana (2:47)

A group of Dominican students participated in a two-week service learning trip to Native American reservations in Montana and the Dakotas. The students created a booklet of information on environmental issues and taught this to Native American students at the reservation schools. The students also learned about Native American spirituality and visited historic sites and national parks.

Dominican University hosts Potterpalooza (3:15)

Dominican University hosted Potterpalooza, a celebration of the Harry Potter books and films, on Saturday, July 9. The event featured a dinner in the dining hall, photos with costumed characters, classes with DU professors, campus tours, Potter Jeopardy and wand making. The campus tours featured recreated scenes from the books and movies.

Students participate in three-week study trip to Cuba (3:06)

A group of 20 Dominican University students traveled to Cuba from May 13 to June 3. Dominican is the first university in the country to send students on a short term academic trip to Cuba since President Obama eased travel restrictions in January.

Americana: Search for Cultural Identity (1:51)

Senior Angelica Diaz created a documentary film as part of her degree with distinction project. The film features interviews with Diaz's relatives who immigrated to America from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Mexico. The film will be shown during the Exposition of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Investigations on Wednesday, April 6 at 4:15 p.m. in the Social Hall.

Students learn about Aikido in seminar course (3:49)

Students in Dr. Dianne Costanzo's senior seminar class, "Aikido as Contemplation," are learning about virtues and values by reading Aristotle and Eastern philosophers. Once a week, they experience virtue in action by hitting the mats at Costanzo's dojo, where she is a sensei--an instructor of the Japanese martial art of Aikido.

Professor ran Chicago Marathon to raise money for organizations (1:51)

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, Charlie Stoops, associate professor in the Graduate School of Social Work, ran the Chicago Marathon on October 10 to raise funds for the Center for Domestic Peace, which he co-founded, and the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women's Network. Apparel design students decorated bras for breast cancer awareness, and apparel merchandising students designed window displays to exhibit the bras in several stores in Forest Park and Oak Park. Each of the bras was decorated to represent a particular goddess.

Nutrition science students create award-winning burger (2:40)

A team of Dominican nutrition science students won first place in this summer's annual Burger Throwdown, sponsored by the American Culinary Federation's Windy City Chapter, with their Asian inspired burger recipe. Highlights from Blues and the Spirit II (3:51)

Dominican University hosted the second Blues and the Spirit Symposium on Chicago Blues and Gospel Music on June 9 and 10. The symposium commemorated the centennial of Howlin' Wolf's birth. Keynote speakers were Chuck D, co-founder of seminal rap group Public Enemy, and Dr. Karen Wilson, assistant director of the Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts at University of California, Riverside. The symposium also featured a pro jam with some of the original Howlin' Wolf sidemen and an after party at Rosa's Lounge.

Alternative Spring Break trip to Montgomery, Alabama (3:01)

A group of Dominican University students participated in a week-long immersion experience at Resurrection Catholic Missions in Montgomery, Alabama. The students did service at a grade school and children's hospital, as well as learned about Civil Rights history by visiting significant sites from the Civil Rights Movement.

Dominican resurrects 90-year-old cistern to keep modern campus green (2:16)

Dominican University is using water stored in a 90-year-old cistern, which had been inactive for decades, to irrigate its campus and to circulate through the cooling system of its newest state-of-the-art academic building. This is saving the university 4-6 million gallons of potable water per year, which had previously been purchased from the Village of River Forest.

Students organize benefit for shelter in Kenya (3:20)

Senior honors students at Dominican University have organized a benefit for Heshima House, a safe house for refugee girls in Nairobi, Kenya. The benefit will be held on Tuesday, November 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Parmer Hall Atrium. The students sent digital cameras to the girls in Kenya to have them document their daily lives. The girls' photographs will be on display, and the co-founder of Heshima House, Anne Sweeney, will speak about the program.

Digital collection of Civil War letters (5:12)

A digital collection of Civil War letters, documents and other materials is now available through the Dominican University library. The Noah Hart Papers consist of correspondence from Captain Noah Hart to his wife Emily Julia Peck Hart. The collection was donated in 1967 by Annia Keating Hart, a 1927 graduate of Rosary College and the wife of Noah Hart’s grandson. Tim Lazicki conducts research at Alexian Brothers Medical Center (3:29)

Dominican University Junior Tim Lazicki has been conducting neuroscience research at Alexian Brothers Medical Center since January 2009, working alongside Dr. Jeffrey Lewine. Several of his research projects have focused on the neural mechanisms of autism, and he received a W. Joseph Gartner Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 from ARRISE Centers, Inc. for his autism research.

Delta Blues Experiential Learning Trip (4:40)

In this experiential course, "The Racial and Musical Legacy of Memphis and the Mississippi Delta," students explore the Southern roots of American music and its relationship to the Civil Rights Movement. During a five-day trip, students travel to significant historical locations in Memphis and the Mississippi delta.

Highlights from Candle and Rose 2009 (1:23)

Watch some highlights from Dominican University's 81st annual Candle and Rose ceremony, held on Friday, May 1. During the ceremony, which begins at dusk on the evening before graduation, the graduating seniors walk with lit candles, and their chosen partners walk carrying roses. Two lines process across the upper and lower cloister walks, assembling in the quad. Following a benediction and several student speeches, the seniors and their partners exchange the candle and rose. The seniors receive a rose as a living symbol of the beauty, love and compassion they have experienced at Dominican. The seniors bestow upon their partners the truth and knowledge they have gained at the university, represented in the candles that they exchange.

Nutrition Science Experimental Food Expo (3:02)

Dominican University nutrition science students presented their unique food creations during the 2009 Experimental Food Industry Showcase on Tuesday, April 14. The food products were healthy, low-fat and low-calorie, such as the Man Muffin, a low-fat alternative to the breakfast muffin; the vegetable ice cream, including three servings of vegetables in one scoop of ice cream; and the mac ‘ n' cheese with hidden vegetables. Some of the students talk about their food products in this video.

Dominican University's 2009 student fashion show will be held on Saturday, April 4 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 5 at 3 p.m. Models will exhibit over 135 original garments designed and created by students majoring in apparel design. The production is completely organized and staged by the apparel merchandising students. Tickets are $12 and $8 for students.

Photo Slide Show of 2009 Alternative Spring Break Trips (2:17)

During Dominican University's spring break, over 20 students participated in four different alternative spring break trips. The trips included doing home repair through Nazareth Farm in West Virginia; helping build homes with Habitat for Humanity in Madison, Wisconsin; doing various service projects in the city of Chicago; and spending time helping the Domincian sisters at the Sinsinawa Mound in Wisconsin.

Apparel Design Student Researches Traditional Dress (3:31)

Senior apparel design student Erika Neumayer researched the traditional dress of her ancestors, the Donauschwaben people. She also recreated three dresses from three towns in the Donauschwaben region, located in former Yugoslavia. Neumayer will present her research as a Degree with Distinction Project at the 2nd Annual Exposition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Investigations at Dominican University on April 1.

Dominican University Stands in Solidarity Against Hate (3:55)

On Sunday, March 1, over 160 students and other members of the Dominican community, including President Donna M. Carroll, silently stood in solidarity against members of the Westboro Baptist Church, who were protesting the university's production of "The Laramie Project." Ethics Bowl Team Heads to Nationals (2:48)

Dominican University's inaugural ethics bowl team will compete in the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl on March 5 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The team qualified for the national competition by finishing second in the regional ethics bowl in November. Good luck to the team members as they go on to compete against the best teams in the nation.

Preview of "The Laramie Project" (3:15)

The Performing Arts Center will present "The Laramie Project," an exploration of the aftermath of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, during the weekend of Friday, February 27 through Sunday, March 1 in the Martin Recital Hall. Friday and Saturday night performances will begin at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday's performance will begin at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by calling the box office at (708) 488-5000.

Service Learning Trip to Cuernavaca, Mexico (4:56)

A group of six Dominican University students, along with three faculty and staff members, traveled to Cuernavaca, Mexico from January 2-9, 2009 for a service learning and cultural immersion experience. The group stayed at the Cuernavaca Center for Intercultural Dialogue on Development (CCIDD), a Christian social justice center that engages groups of visitors in cross-cultural experiences, spiritual reflection and social analysis.

Undergraduate Research in Neuroscience (4:22)

Through the Summer Scholars Program, Dominican University Senior Mary Petrosko researched the effects of Ginkgo biloba on the learning and memory of Aplysia (sea slugs). Dr. Robert Calin-Jageman, assistant professor of psychology, served as an advisor for this research. Watch this video to learn more about Petrosko's research.
