Dominican University hosts first annual Kids Cook-Off
Dominican University will host the first annual Kids Cook-Off on Saturday, August 6 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Christopher Nutrition Science Center on the Main Campus, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest. Designed for children between the ages of four and 12, the day-long event will include a cooking competition, Healthy Exhibit Hall, professional speakers on healthy living, and games and activities for kids.
Those interested in participating can complete an online form, submit one or two original recipes and pay a $25 entry fee at www.dom.edu/cookoff. The deadline for registration is Saturday, July 30.
Participants will be separated into two age categories for the cook-off. Children
between four and six will participate in a non-cooking section featuring categories such as
smoothie, trail mix, wrap/sandwich and granola bar. They will have 35 minutes to prepare and plate
their entry. Children between seven and 12 will participate in a cooking section featuring
categories such as pizza, salad, meat, dairy and egg. They will have 65 minutes to prepare and
plate their dish.
For the cook-off, children must do 95 percent of the preparation, cooking and presentation. All participants will start with unprepared and uncooked ingredients. Parents can assist with anything considered dangerous like cutting or turning on the oven. Handicapped children will be allowed to do as much as they are able with some help from an assigned person.
