Dominican University hosted Potterpalooza, a celebration of the Harry Potter books and films, on Saturday, July 9. The event featured a dinner in the dining hall, photos with costumed characters, classes with DU professors, campus tours, Potter Jeopardy and wand making. The campus tours featured recreated scenes from the books and movies.

Catharine "Tex" Stewart-Roache, ’61 celebrated her 50th class reunion by riding her bike 500 miles from Kansas City, MO to Dominican’s campus for reunion weekend. A group of staff, faculty and students greeted her at the main gates of campus on June 2. A native of Texas, Catharine now lives in New Mexico and enjoys an active lifestyle of traveling, cycling, running, hiking, skiing and scuba diving. She is the co-author of the book: Women to Women: A Handbook for Active Aging.

The Graduate School of Social Work hosted the 4th Annual African American and Latino Social Work Symposium on March 30. Father Michael Pfleger, pastor of Saint Sabina Church, presented the keynote address and received the Visionary Social Work Award. The symposium also featured panel discussions, agency and student presentations.

Dominican University held its first Bike DU Week from April 11-15, featuring a blessing of the bikes, free breakfast snacks for cyclists, a bike expo and an afternoon bike ride through the neighborhoods.

During the annual Teach Children to Save Day on Tuesday, April 12, Dominican University students, faculty, staff and representatives from U.S. Bank went to local grade schools to teach the children the importance of saving money. The Teach Children to Save Day is organized by Dan Condon, professor of economics in the Brennan School of Business and the director of Dominican’s U.S. Bank Center for Economic Education, which provides economic education programs for local K-12 schools.

During Spring Break, March 5-13, several groups of students participated in service trips to give back to the community. Students served the homeless at a Catholic Worker community in Kansas City, helped rebuild homes in New Orleans, tutored refugee children at schools in Atlanta, and provided service to the Dominican sisters at the Sinsinawa Mound in Wisconsin. As part of Family Weekend, Dominican students and their families helped paint two murals at Lexington School in Maywood on Saturday, February 26. Through a partnership with the Proviso-Leyden Council for Community Action, the Dominican volunteers teamed up with eighth graders and their families from the grade school. The murals were designed by eighth grade students as their class gift to the school.

Dominican’s Blues and the Spirit Initiative, in partnership with the Jimmy and Mary Reed
Foundation, hosted a symposium on the life and legacy of blues musician Jimmy Reed on February 15.
The symposium featured a panel discussion with some of Jimmy Reed's children, blues musicians,
historians and experts on intellectual property rights.

Dominican University has been involved in Oliver Wendell Holmes School’s Rocket Into Reading
Program for five years. The program culminates with Guest Reader Day, during which dignitaries from
the community visit the school to read to students. This year four Dominican student athletes read
to Holmes students, including Andy Lynch (men's soccer), Trent Miller (men's soccer), Emily
Hereford (women's tennis), and Danielle Miller (women's basketball).

A group of Dominican University students traveled to Cuernavaca, Mexico from January 2-9, 2011 for a service learning and cultural immersion experience. The group stayed at the Cuernavaca Center for Intercultural Dialogue on Development (CCIDD), a Christian social justice center that engages groups of visitors in cross-cultural experiences, spiritual reflection and social analysis. The students did construction work at La Estacion, a former train station that is now a squatter settlement.

Dominican University’s Social Hall was transformed into an indoor “ice” rink on December 1. Students were able to borrow real skates and glide around on a synthetic ice rink.

Dominican students in a child development course have been doing service learning at St. Angela School in Chicago's Austin neighborhood. The Dominican students created educational games, and on November 15 and 17 they played these games with kindergarten and first grade students. These "old fashioned" games benefit children's social skills and cognitive skills and were developed to promote advances in mathematics, phonological awareness and other academic concepts.

Several events were held on campus leading up to Halloween. The Commuter Student Association sponsored their annual Haunted Tours, the business office hosted the staff Halloween social, and the Organization of Latin American Students held a prayer service for El Dia de los Muertos. In addition, there was a Halloween themed open mic night, a pumpkin hunt on campus and an outdoor bonfire.

Dominican University again served as a primary sponsor for the Park District of Oak Park's annual Frank Lloyd Wright Races on Sunday, October 24. Over 100 Dominican University faculty, staff, students, and alumni walked or ran in the races.

Through the Hooked on Books program, School of Education students in Dr. Penny Silvers's class partnered with grade school children from West Garfield Park’s Off the Street Club to help improve the children’s literacy skills and foster a love of reading. On Thursday, October 7, the grade school students came to Dominican University to meet with their Dominican graduate student mentors. On Saturday, October 16, they visited the Barnes & Noble store in Chicago’s Loop to select and purchase books with $70 gift cards provided by the Kaplan Foundation Fund in partnership with the Chicago Community Trust.

Dominican University students planned a prayer service and information session to raise awareness about the current situation in Sudan. In January, voters in Sudan will decide whether Southern Sudan should succeed from Northern Sudan. Consequently, there is an increased fear of violence and civil war in the country. Dominican hosted the annual DU Fest on Sunday, August 29 in the university's Quad. Students, faculty and staff celebrated the beginning of the academic year with food, games, music and other activities. Classes begin on Monday, August 30.

New and returning resident students moved into the residence halls on Friday, August 27. A group of returning students was on hand to serve as the "move-in crew" for all new students. Through this annual tradition, the move-in crew provides some extra "muscle" to help ease the load for the new students and their families.

Dominican hosted a community tea party and picnic, celebrating Alice in Wonderland on Sunday, July 11 in the Quad. The festivities included a tea party, croquet games, a performance by students in the Actors Garden theatre camp, and a dramatic reading by storyteller Janice Del Negro.

Dominican University has launched a new Community Music Program, featuring a series of summer music classes for children, teens and adults. The music program offers three one-week sessions of classes in piano, strings, voice and musicianship for children and teenagers and three-week sessions for adults.

The Brennan School of Business's community leadership development program concluded on Friday, June 18 with a recognition ceremony. The participants have met monthly since January to analyze and develop specific solutions to challenges faced by the villages of Oak Park and River Forest. The program is funded through a $30,000 grant from the Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation.

Dominican University hosted the second Blues and the Spirit Symposium on Chicago Blues and Gospel Music on June 9 and 10. The symposium commemorated the centennial of Howlin' Wolf's birth. Keynote speakers were Chuck D, co-founder of seminal rap group Public Enemy, and Dr. Karen Wilson, assistant director of the Gluck Fellows Program of the Arts at University of California, Riverside. The symposium also featured a pro jam with some of the original Howlin' Wolf sidemen and an after party at Rosa's Lounge.

During the annual Teach Children to Save Day on April 27, Dominican University students, staff
and alumni educated grade school kids on the importance of saving money. Around 30 volunteers were
trained to lead a 45-minute lesson in first, second and third grade classes in several local
schools. The volunteers read a short story that focuses on saving and then led a discussion with
the students that focused on topics such as budgeting, banking and the difference between needs and
wants.

In honor of Earth Day, the Eco Club hosted a garden party for all students, faculty and staff at
Dominican. The party featured organic treats and was held in the university's "secret garden." The
garden, hidden between four buildings, was recovered and renovated two summers ago by a local Girl
Scout Troop.

The apparel design and merchandising department presented the annual student fashion show, “
Bloom,” on April 10 and 11 in the Lund Auditorium. Models exhibited over 150 original garments
designed and created by students majoring in apparel design. The production was completely
organized and staged by senior apparel students. In addition, 17 graduating senior designers
showcased a collection of garments as the culminating work of their college studies.

national event to end violence against women, on Monday, April 12. Participants marched from
Dominican's main campus to Concordia University.

Dominican University students delivered over $1,000 worth of food to the Catholic Charities food
pantry in Cicero on Tuesday, December 15. The students didn’t organize a typical canned food drive,
instead they donated a valuable resource: their on-campus meals. Through Project Share a Meal,
students were encouraged to donate up to 10 meals each. Students donated 258 meals for a total of
$784 of food. Chartwells, the campus food service, added a $400 donation to the total. Chartwells
purchased the food that the pantry requested--pasta, pasta sauce, rice and beans--and the students
helped deliver it.

Dominican University’s Recipe Box Café ushered in the holiday season on December 3 with a
traditional High Tea for over 80 people. The tea, which was prepared and served by students
enrolled in Dominican’s nutrition science program, was held around a decorated Christmas tree in
the two-story atrium of Parmer Hall. For the high tea, patrons donned holiday regalia and festive
hats and enjoyed recorded carols and songs of the season. The Recipe Box Café is celebrating its
50th anniversary this year.

The men's soccer team had their most successful season in history in the fall 2009. The team had
a 19-2-3 overall record and qualified for the Final Four of the NCAA Division III tournament.

As part of orientation, new students at Dominican University are able to participate in a
service experience. This year the students spent the morning of Monday, August 31, cleaning up
trash in neighboring Thatcher Woods. This experience introduces the new students to service, which
is an important element of Dominican's mission.

Students at Dominican University recently completed a painting marathon course, a three-credit,
intensive art course taught outdoors en plein air over a two-week period. Students began a new
painting each day and completed ten paintings by the end of the course. All work was done from
direct observation.

The 81st annual Candle and Rose ceremony was held on Friday, May 1. During the ceremony, which
begins at dusk on the evening before graduation, the graduating seniors walk with lit candles, and
their chosen partners walk carrying roses. Following a benediction and several student speeches,
the seniors and their partners exchange the candle and rose. The seniors receive a rose as a living
symbol of the beauty, love and compassion they have experienced at Dominican. The seniors bestow
upon their partners the truth and knowledge they have gained at the university, represented in the
candles that they exchange.
