Professor's new book drapes Mad Men in rhetorical theory

Jennifer C. Dunn is a recognized expert on the the cultural significance of AMC's hit television show Mad Men. She is co-editor of Lucky Strikes and a Three Martini Lunch: Critical Discourses of Television's Mad Men, a book that explores the cultural significance, educational value and mass appeal of the nostalgic 1960s series. The book is due out from Cambridge Publishers in July 2012.

Students from Dr. Eboo Patel's Interfaith Leadership class held a "speedfaithing" event after Patel gave the 2011 Lund-Gill Lecture on November 1. The event, which lined up some 100 participants for five-minute conversations with each other about their faith backgrounds, was designed to kickstart interfaith dialogue on campus and in the community.

Dominican students tackle food desert in Maywood

Students and faculty members from Dominican's Nutrition Sciences program worked to combat the village of Maywood's status as a "food desert" by encouraging the use of fresh produce available at the Maywood Market grocery store and local farmer's market. In light of the recent closing of the store and First Lady Michelle Obama's visit to combat food deserts in Chicago, the problem has proven to be more complex than many originally thought.




Dominican has strong showing at annual Frank Lloyd Wright

Dominican fielded a team of 95 runners and walkers for this year’s Frank Lloyd Wright Race on Sunday, October 23. The team had a number of runners who finished at the top of their respective age groups. The university was the executive platinum sponsor for the races, which take participants on a route through neighborhoods featuring many of the famed architect's residential design projects. Dominican has sponsored the event for the past seven years.




Recipe Box Cafe has served up meals, student experience for more than 50 years

The Recipe Box Cafe, a program of the Nutrition Sciences Department, has been serving up healthy meals and a wealth of experience for students in nutrition and dietetics, food industry management and food science majors at Dominican for more than 50 years. Each week during the school year, students work with professional chefs to plan, prepare and serve more than 60 meals to members of the community.




Mary Robinson to give 2011 Brennan School of Business Ethics and Leadership Lecture on October 18

Mary Robinson, former president of Ireland and U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, gave the 2011 Ethics and Leadership Lecture for Dominican's Brennan School of Business on October 18. Dean Arvid Johnson says hosting a leader who so embodies the spirit of ethics taught throughout the business curriculum can serve as an inspirational model for Dominican students.




Lund-Gill Chair Eboo Patel Brings Interfaith Focus to Dominican

Dominican University is embracing interfaith dialogue as a key academic and cultural focus for its students and community through an intensive partnership with the pioneering Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), an organization founded by Eboo Patel, the university’s Lund-Gill Chair for 2011.




Lt. Governor Simon signs Dominican onto Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact

Illinois Lt. Governor Sheila Simon joined Dominican University President Donna Carroll in signing the university onto the Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact at a ceremony held outside Parmer Hall on August 25. The Compact informs the university’s ongoing sustainability development plan, 4Rfuture, that will be the guiding force for campus operations, student initiatives, curriculum development and community outreach.



DU Stars claim top spots in NAC preseason polls

The Dominican University Stars are rising to the top of the Northern Athletics Conference preseason rankings. The men’s soccer team and volleyball team are ranked #1 in the NAC preseason polls and the women’s soccer team is pegged at #2. All three teams open the season next week.






Students participate in Candle and Rose tradition

At dusk on May 6, Dominican seniors and their chosen partners will fill the Quad in their graduation regalia to celebrate the 83-year-old tradition of Candle and Rose. The ceremony first began in 1928 when the university was still an all-girls school known as Rosary College. In its original format, seniors were allowed to ask only juniors or other underclassmen who attended Rosary to accompany them as their partner or “rose.”





Alumna supports MBA student from China

Yanfei Hu has had some unique educational opportunities. Despite coming from a poor background in China, she received her bachelor’s degree in Chinese literature. She was accepted into a university in China based on sheer intelligence alone. Even still, her chances at continuing her education or obtaining a career in China were extremely slim. With the support of alumna Gera-Lind Kolarik, she is now an MBA student at Dominican University's Brennan School of Business.




Students continue research over the summer

Dominican University’s Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Investigations Expo (URSCI) has taken place every spring semester since 2007. The expo consists of students from all disciplines presenting research projects, capstone papers and degree with distinction projects. URSCI also awards grants to winning applicants that range from $500 - $2000, the largest award being the Undergraduate Summer Scholar Program (USSP). This year’s winners are Joshua Johnson, John Pontikis and Kaydene DeSilva.



Lunch Bunch celebrates 25 years at Recipe Box Cafe

The Recipe Box Café has been a popular tradition of the Nutrition Sciences Department at Dominican University since 1959. For the past two decades it has been under the direction of Dr. Judy Beto, professor of nutrition sciences. The weekly lunch for local residents takes place in Parmer Hall’s atrium during the day in the spring semester and the evening during the fall. While the attendance is always high, there is one group that never misses a lunch and, indeed, manages to meet for lunch even when the Recipe Box Cafe is on summer hiatus.



Student documents family culture and history in film

Angelica Diaz, a senior majoring in communications with a concentration in film, was the recipient of an undergraduate summer scholarship to fund an ambitious film project. The project, which also afforded Diaz a degree with distinction, consists of a 40-minute documentary film titled, Americana: Search for Cultural Identity, and a four-part essay. Diaz will present the film during the URSCI Expo on April 6.





Sustainability initiatives impact Dominican campus

Going green is a topic on everyone’s minds lately. Businesses and colleges alike have made steps to become more energy efficient and sustainable, and Dominican University is well into its efforts. Amy McCormack, senior vice president for administration, has planned out an overarching sustainability plan for the university titled 4Rfuture. The title pays tribute to the traditional three R’s of green living: reuse, reduce and recycle. The fourth R in McCormack’s plan stands for respect, which people must show to the Earth to sustain it.



Students help rebuild homes in New Orleans

Debra Ranallo, assistant registrar, accompanied a group of students in the post-baccalaureate pre-medical program on a service trip to New Orleans during spring break. The group worked through Habitat for Humanity, rebuilding homes destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. They were also in New Orleans for the annual Mardi Gras celebration. Students spend spring break serving others

The average college student spends his or her spring break sleeping or catching up on studies, but some spend the week serving others. Fifteen Dominican University students split into two groups to visit Kansas City where they focused on community and peacemaking and Atlanta where they learned what it means to "welcome the stranger."






O'Connor Art Gallery innovates at Dominican

One of the most interesting places on Dominican University's campus is also its best-kept secret. The O'Connor Art Gallery has hosted both solo and group shows from a variety of well-known Chicago artists, but it is hidden on the fourth floor of Lewis Hall, a floor that usually only art students and faculty ever visit. However, those who do bother to make the trip will be impressed with what they see.





Dominican alumni participate in Chicago Fashion Incubator

It's no surprise to learn that many artists, fashion or otherwise, aren't particularly knowledgeable about the business world. The Chicago Fashion Incubator (CFI), an initiative of the City of Chicago in collaboration with Macy's on State Street, picks six designers a year to show them the ropes of fashion's other element. Since its inception in 2008, the highly competitive residency program has accepted two Dominican graduates. Miriam Carlson '09 just finished her one-year tenure with the program, and Concetta Cipriano '07 is one of six new designers coming in for 2011. In addition, Erika Neumayer '09 has been accepted in the CFI Associate Designer auxiliary program.

Dominican basketball player stars in feature film

Dominican University freshman Taylor DeRoo is making his big-screen movie debut on Friday, February 25 in The Frontier Boys. The independent film, directed by John Grooters, follows four high school friends whose friendship is put to the test after a drive-by shooting. The film draws interesting parallels to DeRoo’s own life. He plays a character named TJ Lewis, a Christian high school basketball star who ends up hurt and in the hospital after the shooting.




Dominican celebrates the legacy of blues musician Jimmy Reed

In the early twentieth century, Chicago was the birthplace of electric blues. The city kick-started the fruitful careers of Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Magic Sam and Jimmy Reed. Dominican University has developed a reputation as a beacon for the blues in the Chicago area.






Dominican responds to biggest snowstorm in a decade

February 1 and 2 brought the worst snowstorm in the Chicago area since 1999. Through Tuesday afternoon and early into Wednesday morning 20.2 inches of snow were dumped on the city, leading to abandoned cars on Lake Shore Drive, street-blocking snowdrifts and power outages throughout Dominican University.





Dominican launches first study abroad program in Cuba

In an attempt to open up communication and encourage global exchange, President Obama lifted the strict travel regulation policy that has prohibited academic trips to Communist-ruled Cuba since 2004. This summer, Dominican University will be the first school in the U.S. to hold a three-week study abroad program in the country since the travel ban.





Lund-Gill Chair teaches courses on Chinese Medicine

Dominican University’s Lund-Gill Chair is one of the most esteemed positions that the school can offer to scholars. The purpose of this position is to bring a thoroughly established mind to campus with a specialization in a field related to the arts and sciences. The current 2010-2011 Lund-Gill Chair and Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence is Chia-Feng Chang, a scholar in the academic field of Chinese medicine.




Women's athletic teams excel this season

Historically, when speaking about Dominican University athletics, the men’s teams are the first to be brought up. However, that might change due to the outstanding performance of the women’s teams this season.







Students compete in first Body Balance Challenge

The average college student’s idea of a proper diet and exercise regimen includes eating Easy Mac and running to class. Erin Kuh, a student in Dominican’s MBA and Dietetic Internship program, sought to rectify this by organizing the university’s first-ever Body Balance Challenge. The first run of the challenge, from September 27 to December 3, included lessons on diet, exercise and stress management.




Dominican names U.S. Bank Center for Economic Education

Dominican University announced on Thursday, December 2 a $3 million donation from U.S. Bank. In recognition of this generous support, the university’s Center for Economic Education has been renamed the U.S. Bank Center for Economic Education.






Students welcome refugees to the U.S.

Being forced out of your country with no option but to leave behind the home you’ve made and the language you know is a nightmare for most, but a reality for refugees coming to America. There is no cure for culture shock, but Exodus World Services and their partnership with students at Dominican University try to make the process as welcoming as possible.

The Lund Auditorium at Dominican University was filled with flying monkeys, melting witches, and three-foot flowers the weekend of November 12-14 as the theatre department staged The Wiz. The fantastical play was no easy feat for those working behind the scenes.






Founder's Day celebrated around campus

Leaving home for college is frightening enough; imagine moving to another country that speaks a language you don’t understand at only 17 years of age. That was what Father Samuel Mazzuchelli did when he left Italy to become a Dominican, a friar of the Order of Preachers, in 1828.






Halloween Happenings at Dominican University

In celebration of Halloween, Dominican University hosted a slew of events leading up to October 31. The week kicked off Tuesday night with a Halloween-themed open mic held in the clock lobby.







DU participates in community celebration of Mark Twain

Mark Twain is having a big year in 2010. It is the 100th anniversary of his death, the 175th anniversary of his birth, and the 125th anniversary of the publication of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. “Celebrating Twain: One Author, Three Communities” brought together Oak Park, Forest Park and River Forest to pay tribute to the famous American writer.





Students design bras for breast cancer awareness

The goddesses of Greek mythology have landed on Earth as part of Dominican University's collaboration with Baubo’s Garden to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The project, which features hand-designed bras displayed in shop windows located in Forest Park and Oak Park, was the brainchild of Eden DeGenova, owner of Baubo’s Garden, a woman’s lingerie boutique in Forest Park.
