Background:
Matt Hlinak joined Dominican University as Assistant Provost for Continuing Studies and
Special Initiatives in 2011. In that role, he leads the School of Professional and Continuing
Studies and is responsible for developing the university's efforts in distance learning and online
and adult education. Under his guidance, the school has expanded its course offerings to include an
online bachelor's degree in legal studies, certificate in coaching and a master's degree in
conflict resolution. Prior to joining Dominican, Hlinak was academic coordinator and instructor in
the Northwestern University School of Continuing Studies. He also has taught classes in writing,
law and paralegal studies at several universities in the Chicago area and is an active
interdisciplinary scholar and author.

Hlinak's recent publications include
"Christian Legal Society v. Martinez and the Role of Exclusive Religious Organizations in
Public Universities” in the
International Journal of Religion and Spirituality in Society (2011), “Employee Bad Faith
and Workers’ Compensation Retaliatory Discharge in Illinois” in the
Midwest Academy of Legal Studies in Business Proceedings (2010) and “Judo Comes to
California: Judo vs. Wrestling in the American West, 1900-1920” in the
Journal of Asian Martial Arts (2009). In 2010, he presented the paper “Italo Calvino’s
Literary Terrorism in If on a winter’s night a traveler” at the Midwest Modern Language Association
Conference and the paper “The Nomos Debate in Antigone and Ancient Athens” at the Midwest Political
Science Association Conference. In 2011, he peresented “Cheating in Professional Sports and the
Criminal Justice System” for the Midwest Academy of Legal Studies in Business and “Education
Requirements for Public Pension Trustees” at the Illinois Public Employee Retirement Systems
Summit. His recent published fiction includes “After He Left” in
