Electronic Reserves FAQ
Electronic Reserves is a service the library provides. The following is a list of frequently asked questions about this service.
What is Electronic Reserves?
The Electronic Reserves is a service provided by the library which will allow students access to reserve readings 24 hours a day from any computer that has Internet access. Paper documents are scanned into PDF files, password protected, posted on the Web, and read using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Documents already in electronic format can also be posted on the Web or links to URL's can be created so students can access course readings from one central site.
How can the Electronic Reserves be accessed?
Using the Internet, students can access Electronic Reserves through the Dominican University Library web page. The electronic reserves are organized by school, class & instructor. The user must download Adobe Acrobat reader before viewing and printing the documents. Instructions for viewing and printing will be included on the Electronic Reserves web page. These documents are password protected. The students will need to obtain this password from their instructor.
What can be placed on Electronic Reserves?
Instructor generated material (course syllabi, lecture notes or sample exams) and limited portions of copyrighted material (a single article from a given journal issue or a chapter of a book). Due to the fact that large files are difficult to download and print, items submitted must be under 20 pages in length.
How do instructors submit material for Electronic Reserves?
Electronic reserves are submitted just like the traditional reserves. Please submit items with a properly completed Reserve Form (PDF) to the circulation desk in the Library. Since electronic articles need to be password protected, Instructors are required to provide a password for the items. It is the responsibility of the instructor to notify the students of the password. When submitting items, please provide a clear, unbound photocopy of the document on 8 ½ x 11 paper. Photocopies must be single-sided, on white background with black text. Please do not submit items with a wide black border, shadows or poor quality image. Scanning of items may not be possible if the original is in poor condition. Items may also be submitted by email or by diskette. If the document is already in Word, HTML, ASCII Text, JPEG, or PDF Format, please send it as an e-mail attachment to reserves@dom.edu or submit the documents on diskette with a completed Reserve Form.
How long will it take before material will appear on Electronic Reserves?
The amount of time involved in scanning documents and posting them to the web site can be quite significant. We are estimating a 5 day processing time from submission of the item until it appears on Electronic Reserves.
How do copyright and fair use apply to Electronic Reserves?
Electronic reserves is an extension of traditional library services and will be provided in a manner that respects fair use rights, the rights of copyright holders, and current copyright law.
Please see the Copyright Permission Center for further information.
If I'm using Blackboard, do I also place items on Electronic Reserve?
No. If you are using Blackboard you do not need to have an Electronic Reserve posted on the Dominican University Library web page. If you would like a document scanned and converted to a pdf file in order to upload in Blackboard, just submit the document with a properly completed Reserve Form (PDF) to the circulation desk in the Library. We will scan your document, save it to our server and send you the url through an e-mail, which you may post in Blackboard.
