Helpful Hints for Parents of Resident Students
Hint #1 Write often; visit often.
Talk about communication. How often will you communicate? Will it be by phone, email, text messaging or letters? There are many ways to keep in touch with your student. Students enjoy care packages filled with pictures, homemade cookies, laundry money or necessities like shampoo. Warning: do not expect a reply to every letter you write. Your visits give the student a chance to show off his or her new home and introduce you to his or her friends. Surprise visits are not recommended, as students may need to adjust their studying schedule and other activities.Hint #2 Your life is not over.
Parents may also have to adjust—your student will not be around as often as they used to be. The house may now seem empty. Don’t worry—your student did not forget about you! With academics, student involvement and their mission to discover themselves, your child will be very busy throughout his or her college years. Most students say they are constantly worrying about their parents. Students want to see you go out and have a life of your own. Remember that absence makes the heart grow fonder.“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
