  1. How can students balance an academic and social life?

As a general rule, becoming involved in campus activities tends to improve a student’s experience. Not only do co-curricular activities provide opportunities to meet people with similar interests, they also help students apply what they have learned in the classroom to real life. Students active in campus life usually develop time management, communication, leadership and organizational skills that will help them in many ways throughout their lives. A healthy balance of study and co-curricular activities adds a rewarding dimension to the college -experience.
  2. How safe is the campus?

While Dominican University is a relatively safe campus, there are instances when a crime of opportunity occurs. A crime of opportunity is defined as a situation where a crime could have been prevented. We stress that students lock their residence rooms and car doors at all times and never leave book bags, keys or valuables unattended. Campus security is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and is always -available to provide a safety escort.
  3. What if my student has roommate problems?

Roommate conflicts can occur when two or three people share a limited amount of space for an extended period of time. Residence life encourages students to attempt to work out their conflicts rather than ignoring the problem. Resident assistants (RAs) act as neutral facilitators in discussions between roommates. Residence life can be contacted at (708) 524-6217.
  4. What types of fitness facilities are available on campus?

  6. My student is required to do service in the community; what does this mean?

Service learning is a method of teaching and learning which combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility. Community service/civic engagement is a learning opportunity for students in classes designated as Service Learning. This is a wonderful experiential learning opportunity for your student. Encouraging her or him to get engaged in the community helps expand her or his worldview and broaden her or his education. (Service Learning Office, Lewis Hall, Room 214)

Commuters should see the telecommunications coordinator in the Technology Center for a free voicemail account. You can send mail to a resident -student at the following address:
