Wills and Living Trusts
Living trusts
A living trust provides benefits while you are still alive. It is a trust established during your lifetime as revocable, which allows you to make changes. You will transfer substantially all of your property into your living trust during your lifetime, and any omitted assets can be transferred into the trust at the time of death.A living trust will be the mechanism to manage your property before and after your death, as well as provide how those assets, and the income earned by the trust, are distributed after your death. If you should become incapacitated or disabled, the trust is in place to manage your financial affairs, usually by a successor trustee, if you were serving as trustee. A living trust is not subject to probate, and therefore, all provisions of the trust will remain private.
A charitable transfer as part of your revocable living trust can take one of several forms:
- A specific sum of money
- A percentage of the trust assets
- A specific property
- All or a portion of the residual after providing for family and or/others you name.

After providing for family and friends in their wills or living trusts, many alumnae/i and friends include a meaningful gift to Dominican University. These gifts may be a fixed percentage of the estate, a specific dollar amount, specific piece of property, or part or all of the residue of the estate. This is a wonderful way to plan for Dominican's future.
It is important that the gift in your will or living trust be correctly stated. We will be
happy to provide you and your legal adviser with suggested terminology to ensure that Dominican
University is properly named and that any specific wishes for your gift are fulfilled.
