Bowling and Blogging

President-elect Obama cannot, apparently, bowl. Speaking as one whose "crazy bowl" scores back in the daddy/daughter Girl Scout days exceeded his regular bowling score, I can relate.  I suspect Obama would probably fare well in an ethics bowl, however.  In any case, our own students left no doubt as three first-semester freshmen who comprised our fledgling DU team in the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl emerged from this past weekend's regional competition at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, and will be going to the nationals in the spring!

This is our first try at the Ethics Bowl.  Our students beat (is it ethically acceptable to say "beat" I wonder) a bunch of other schools who shall, ahem, remain nameless, debating over such serious issues as the adequacy of having small children live with their mothers in prison, the appropriateness of so-called "poverty tours" and the ethical implications of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act. Many other schools had more representatives on their teams, consisted of upperclassmen, and have fielded teams for several years.  Our students, Lauren Farmer, Anna Golebiowski and Stephen Ridolphi made us proud and they are all freshmen!  For a video from the DU-campus competition from which our winning team emerged, look here.

I see we now have some official student bloggers at Dominican http://www.dom.edu/ican/blogs/ and it's very upsetting to me as (a) they'll probably be more interesting and (b) they'll certainly post more often.  Talk about pressure.  Just what I needed.  Really it's all good and they represent a great sample of our strong and wonderful undergraduate student body.

Meanwhile one of our Journalism courses has this semester unleashed some amazing (if not Amazing™) bloggers who are covering campus and the world every day as they learn how to be journalists through convergent media.  One of my favorite posts, getting back to that gutter-baller from Hyde Park and beyond was an election-night piece I found so compelling: http://domininet.blogspot.com/2008/11/election-day-in-life.html. And here's one on some of the service activities DU students are doing around Thanksgiving: http://domininet.blogspot.com/2008/11/holiday-helping-hands-at-du.html. Finally here's another on some of our very accomplished students, including a professional singer, a missionary, an exchange student and a cross country runner: http://domininet.blogspot.com/2008/11/big-people-on-campus.html Enjoy!
