The Dominican University Department of Athletics announced Jessica Guerrieri as the winner of the department’s 2013 Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
Guerrieri, a four-year letterwinner with the Stars’ women’s volleyball program, posted a 3.78 cumulative grade point average while earning a bachelor’s degree in natural science with a minor in biology and chemistry.
"Jess is a poster child for Division III athletics," said Ryan Baumgartner, the Stars' head women’s volleyball coach for the last two seasons. "She discovered how far she could push herself in every facet of her life; developed as an athlete but more importantly as an individual; and dedicated herself to academics, athletics and community involvement."
On the volleyball court, Guerrieri was a two-time team captain and twice was honored as an All-Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) First Team selection as a setter.
She ranks third all-time on the Stars' career assists list with 2,696 assists in 424 sets over the last four seasons, while both her sophomore and junior seasons assist totals rank in the top five in single-season Dominican University records.
In 2010, Guerrieri’s 1,161 assists led the NAC, helping the Stars to the program’s first-ever NAC Tournament Championship and subsequent automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.
Guerrieri will continue her academic career in the fall, having earned acceptance into the Accelerated Nursing Program at Loyola University in Chicago.
"Jess’s striving for perfection pushed her to excel in the classroom and on the court, a quality she has passed on to her younger teammates," said Baumgartner.
For the 2013 Dominican University Senior Scholar-Athlete, Guerrieri beat out Krzysztof Lagowski (Men’s Soccer), Gabby Sherer (Women’s Cross Country) and Freddy Tovar (Men’s Soccer).
The Dominican University Department of Athletics awards of Male Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Freshman of the Year and YouTube Play of the Year are scheduled to be announced on the Stars' website during the week of June 1.
