Why did you choose to attend Dominican University Graduate School of Social Work...

Janice Zimmerman

MSW Student and Graduate Assistant

I researched a few graduate programs before I chose Dominican University's Graduate School of Social Work. As a higher education employee, choosing a graduate program with highly skilled faculty was paramount. I wanted the confidence of knowing that my professors had practical work experience in the field as well as the ability to teach. In addition, I appreciated that Dominican offered courses in Lake County. This flexibility allowed me to take half of my course load close to home. As a student pursuing my Type 73, I've appreciated the holistic curriculum that has allowed me to investigate the fields of family therapy, juvenile justice, and gerontology.

I think the most compelling reason why I chose Dominican is the global focus. I believe in serving those who are in need and Dominican's global focus supports my passion. Prior to attending Dominican, I traveled to India, the Philippines, Ecuador, Guatemala, and South Africa in order to serve the hungry, hurting, and oppressed. As I begin my final year at Dominican, I look forward to utilizing all I've learned at my internship at a local high school. I look forward to this upcoming year and walk with confidence knowing that the faculty care about my success.

I chose Dominican University Graduate School of Social Work for multiple reasons. The city of Chicago has a rich history in the field of social work and I knew it would provide a full breadth of amazing opportunities for internship and employment. However, it was the international focus that drew me in, molding each course to use an international perspective. As one interested in domestic violence, another good selling point was the fact that professor Dr. Charlie Stoops has expertise in this area. I also appreciated the flexibility of entering as a part-time student as well as learning from a highly skilled and knowledgeable faculty. Ultimately, I felt like Dominican was the right program to meet my needs.
