Sarah Migas
Internet Safety Specialist for the Illinois Attorney General

Children are especially vulnerable online. They fall victim to sex exploitation, pornography, cyber bullying and other forms of aggression.

Working to prevent the online exploitation of children is the main focus of my work today. As an Internet Safety Specialist, I am part of the Internet Crimes Task Force. I travel throughout the State of Illinois, collaborating with law enforcement personnel, school administrators, psychologists and other social workers in an effort to teach children how to make smart online choices. I also work with the Governor’s office and the Illinois State Board of Education on related policy and curriculum issues.

As part of the Attorney General’s office, I helped launch a website, for kids, teenagers, parents and educators who need information or advice about cyber bullying.

I have always been interested in child welfare. As a Jesuit volunteer in Alaska after college, I worked as a child advocate. Later, I worked with abused children at a residential facility in Oregon. I was also interested in the international aspect of child exploitation.

This led me to Dominican University because former Dean Mark Rodgers is a recognized expert in international trafficking. As a graduate student at Dominican, I started an organization to raise awareness about human trafficking. I did a three and a half month internship in Ecuador, working on human trafficking issues. I have also done presentations in schools and worked with other universities to prevent the cyber exploitation of women and children.

I see myself continuing in this area. I especially like working at a macro level, where I feel I can reach more people. However, I do miss doing therapy… so I see myself adding that to my career.

I like what I do, and I can do a lot with the skills I gained from my Dominican education.
