Dominican University Performing Arts Center will present Macbeth, one of Shakespeare’s most highly acclaimed tragedies, during the weekend of Friday, November 13 through Sunday, November 15 in the Lund Auditorium, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.

A mysterious, fast-paced tale of unbridled ambition, Macbeth follows the title character’s journey from war hero to tyrant to outcast, along the downward spiral of greed and the inevitable demise that comes from choosing personal profit over the greater good.

In Dominican’s production, adapted and directed by Krista Hansen, artistic director of the Theatre Arts Lab Series, the 400-year old story of temptation and ambition is revamped in a modern way. Hansen’s adaptation presents a fast-paced, current-day, city spin on the struggle for power and the perils of greed. Just like any major city, the modern setting comes with its share of gangs and territory battles, offering a glimpse into the world of guns, drugs and human trafficking. Consequently, the production allows the audience to examine the realities of urban life, including grief, violence and homelessness. This modern look, which still uses Shakespeare’s language, bridges the history of the play with the importance of its themes.
