Dominican University presents lecture on Edgar Allan Poe
Dominican University will host a lecture titled “Edgar Allan Poe in His Time” by Dr. Daniel Anderson, visiting professor of English at Dominican, on Monday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. in Parmer Hall 108, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.Anderson will examine some of the overlooked aspects of Poe, including his politics, his interest in creating and defining distinctly American literature, and his Southern sensibilities. The lecture will cover some of Poe’s most widely read works, such as “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Gold Bug,” as well as some lesser-known stories and published letters. The program is part of the 2009 Big Read, a community-wide celebration of the work of Edgar Allen Poe. The program is funded through a grant by the National Endowment of the Arts.
Anderson teaches courses in composition and American literature, including the literature of the American South. He received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University and, after working as a reporter and editor for newspapers in Kentucky, Virginia, and Iowa, he obtained graduate degrees in English at Boston College and the University of Minnesota. He is a resident of Oak Park.
