Dominican University announces partnership with Hemingway Foundation
Dominican University is pleased to announce a formal partnership with the Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park to restore the Hemingway Boyhood Home at 600 North Kenilworth Avenue as a center fostering cultural literacy and offering programming that explores Hemingway’s role as a global citizen and one of the 20th century’s most influential writers. The announcement of this partnership coincides with the authorization of a $150,000 grant to help renovate the property (Illinois House Bill 313) made possible through the support of State Senator Don Harmon.
As part of the initial two-year collaborative agreement between the university and the foundation, Dominican will lease the Boyhood Home and oversee its maintenance, with an option to assume title to the property at the end in 2011. In the meantime, the university and the foundation will attempt to raise funds for the full restoration of the property and jointly develop educational and community programming. The estimated cost of this project is $1.5 to $2 million.
The Ernest Hemingway Boyhood Home is an important component of Oak Park’s “Hemingway Campus,” which includes the Hemingway Birthplace Home and the Ernest Hemingway Museum. The Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park has been an active steward of this legacy for over 25 years, positioning the campus as a popular Illinois tourist destination.
“Ernest Hemingway is an international literary figure and a cultural anchor for our community,” said Dominican University President Donna M. Carroll. “We are excited about working with the foundation to advance his contribution to the literary canon while enhancing our community and enriching the university’s academic programming.”
Founded in 1901, Dominican University offers 50 undergraduate academic programs and 34 graduate programs through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Brennan School of Business, the School of Education, the Graduate School of Social Work, and the School of Leadership and Continuing Studies. In the 2010 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report ranked Dominican University in the top 20 of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “Great School at a Great Price.”
