Two DU students receive Gilman Scholarships for study abroad
Dominican University sophomore Evangelina Covarrubias of Chicago’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood and junior Tracy Beswick of Belvidere were awarded Gilman Scholarships for study abroad. Covarrubias, a Spanish studies major, received a $2,500 scholarship to participate in the Salamanca study abroad program. Beswick, an apparel merchandising and international business major, received a $3,500 scholarship to participate in the Milan study abroad program.The Gilman Scholarship Program was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. Through the program, U.S. undergraduate students are given the opportunity to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Students who are attending a two- or four-year college or university and are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding are eligible for this award. Since the inception of the Gilman Scholarship Program in 2001, 18,960 applications have been received and 4,728 scholarships have been awarded. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, this congressionally funded program is administered by the Institute of International Education through its Southern Regional Center in Houston.
The Salamanca study abroad program allows for Dominican University students to travel to the University of Salamanca, the oldest university in Spain, and study Spanish culture and language. Students attend classes taught by professors of the University of Salamanca. Students have the option of studying abroad for one semester or for one full academic year.
The Milan study abroad program allows for Dominican University students to travel to Milan, Italy’s commercial and financial capital. Students are able to study the Italian language and attend one or more of the universities in the area, including the Instituto di Moda Burgo for fashion students. Students have the option of studying abroad for one semester or for one full academic year.
Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dominican offers 50 undergraduate academic programs in the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 34 graduate programs through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Brennan School of Business, the School of Education, the Graduate School of Social Work, and the School of Learning and Continuing Studies. In the 2009 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities.
