Dominican Announces Summer Book Recommendations
Dominican University’s Butler Children’s Literature Center has announced its summer book recommendations for children. The list, which was shared during a program at the university on May 21, features selections for pre-school children to teenagers.“Educational studies have shown that children who read during the summer maintain or improve their reading skills and are more prepared when they return to school in the fall,” said Dr. Janice Del Negro, assistant professor in Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science. “The point of this list is to suggest quality, light reading materials for children and young adults in the summer. These were books that particularly delighted our panelists, all of whom are fans of children’s literature.”
Compiled by Del Negro, a children’s book author and nationally recognized storyteller, with contributions by Becca Boland, young adult librarian at Hinsdale Public Library, and Janet Thompson, children’s librarian at the Chicago Public Library and a reviewer for School Library Journal, the complete list can be found at http://www.dom.edu/events-news/newsroom/summerreading.html
Amongst Thompson’s pre-school selections are Lisa Eisenberg’s Silly School Riddles, Steve Jenkins and Betsy Franco’s Bees, Snails, and Peacock Tails, and Michael Rex’s Goodnight Goon: a Petrifying Parody.
Del Negro’s selections for children from second to sixth grade include Pat Brisson’s Berties’s Picture Day, Barbara Kerley’s What to Do About Alice?: How Alice Roosevelt Broke the Rules, Charmed the World, and Drove Her Father Teddy Crazy, Claudia Mills’ 7 x 9= Trouble!, and Adam Rex’s Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich.
Boland’s list for children in sixth through tenth grade includes Tonya Hurley’s Ghostgirl, Chris Lynch’s The Big Game of Everything, and Marlene Perez’s Dead is the New Black.
Accredited by the American Library Association, Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science has been educating future librarians and information professionals since 1928. GSLIS offers master’s degrees in library and information science and in knowledge management and a doctoral degree in library and information science.
