Follett Fellow Ed Valauskas is curator of the exhibit "Plants in Print: The Age of Botanical Discovery" which opens September 18 at the Chicago Botanic Garden. In addition, Valauskas is curator for another exhibit at the Chicago Botanic Garden entitled "Treasures from the Chicago Botanic Garden Library's Rare Book Collection." This exhibit includes a number of rare works, manuscripts and illustrations never displayed by the garden because of their rarity.

Valauskas was a invited speaker at the Morton Arboretum’s opening of a new exhibit in September entitled "The Hortus Eystettensis (1613): Basil Besler¹s Magnificent Book and the Garden of Eichstätt." He was also an invited speaker in a national teleconference entitled "Making Copyright Work for Your Library" on September 24. In addition, Valauskas will be moderator of the “Plants in Print Symposium” at the Chicago Botanic Garden on October 15.

Ed Valauskas was an invited speaker at the annual conference of the Illinois Library Association. He and Eszter Hargittai of Northwestern University gave a program entitled "If Google is God, Then What Are Reference Librarians?"" Valauskas was also invited by the Hewlett Foundation to participate in a program at the foundation's headquarters at Palo Alto, CA on open content.

Edward Valauskas, recently appointed Follett chair, was a member of the local organizing committee for the successful Web-Wise Conference on Libraries and Museums in the Digital World in March. Valauskas was an invited speaker on a panel titled "On My Mind: Reflections From the Community." He was also included in a recent op-ed piece in the Boston Globe, where author Nicholas A. Basbanes described the fate of a rare book of botanical prints, "Nurnbergische Hesperides." In addition, Valauskas recently completed a paper, with Nancy R. John of the library at the University of Illinois at Chicago, on the status of Internet-based scholarly journals for the upcoming edition of the Bowker Annual titled "Digital Journals in 2003: Dramatic Growth, New Tools and Economic Drama." This paper reviews advances in digital publishing of journals over the past year.
