DU Book Club to Discuss Anil’s Ghost
Dominican University’s Book Club will discuss Michael Ondaatje’s
Anil’s Ghost on Wednesday, June 18 at 7:00 p.m. The discussion will be held in Lewis
Lounge, located on the first floor of Lewis Hall, 7900 West Division Street, River
Forest.
Anil’s Ghost is set in Sri Lanka during its bloody civil war in the 1980s, where
atrocities are committed by the government, anti-government insurgents, and separatist guerrillas.
The protagonist, Anil Tissera, is a native Sri Lankan who left her homeland 18 years before, and
has returned as a forensic anthropologist sent by the U.N. to investigate reports of mass murders.
Anil and a government archeologist with murky political connections discover a skeleton of a
recently killed young man among ancient bones in a protected sanctuary. Anil sets out to identify
the victim and document his murder, and is led into a web of deceit, violence, terror, love, and
loss.
Following his Booker Prize-winning third novel,
The English Patient, Ondaatje, a native Sri Lankan, again examines human stories as they
intersect with war and brutality. With much of the story told in flashbacks,
Anil’s Ghost becomes a tense thriller as it reveals the secrets of its characters against
the background of Sri Lanka’s beauty and tragedy.
