River Forest Student Earns Prestigious Award at Dominican University

Eric Florance, a resident of River Forest and graduate of Papillion-LaVista High School in Papillion, NE, was recently honored with the St. Catherine Medal from Dominican University. This annual medal is awarded by Kappa Gamma Pi, the National Catholic Honor Society, to a sophomore or junior student who has demonstrated leadership, outstanding service to the university and superior academic achievement. Florance is a junior majoring in biology-chemistry.

An outstanding student preparing for a career in medicine, Florance has participated with numerous university clubs and organizations, including the Health Science Club, where he has served as president, the Nutrition Club, Pro Vita, the Campus Activities Board and the Resident Student Association. As a student athlete, he has also participated in two national soccer tournaments.

Florance has volunteered at several hospitals, including the University of Nebraska’s Genetic Rehabilitation Center, where he worked with children and young adults with genetic and developmental disabilities. “In helping them,” Florance writes, “they helped me to realize the true value and meaning of compassion and love.”

Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dominican offers 50 undergraduate academic programs in the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 15 graduate programs through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Brennan School of Business, the School of Education, the Graduate School of Social Work, and the School of Leadership and Continuing Studies. In the 2008 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the tenth consecutive year.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
