Chicago Student Receives DU’s Rising Star Award

Lisbet Salinas, a resident of Chicago’s South Chicago neighborhood, was honored with Dominican University’s Rising Star Award for demonstrating true Dominican spirit through service activities on and off campus.

Salinas has been very active in a variety of on-campus service projects. She is a member of the Organization of Latin American Students (OLA), the Latino Council, and Advancing in Business and Economic Leadership (ABEL).  She helped raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and volunteered for Dominican’s annual alumnae/i children’s Christmas party.

Recently, Salinas traveled to Ft. Benning, GA on Dominican University’s annual trip to protest the School of the Americas. Last January, she participated in Alternative Winter Break service trip in Cuernavaca, Mexico. During her two week stay, Salinas worked with Habitat for Humanity, assisted at a composting center, and helped clean up a parish.

Also active in her community, Salinas tutors homeless teens at Chicago Hope, works with youth at Casa Juan Diego, and volunteers as a tax preparer for the Tax Assistance Program.

Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dominican offers 50 undergraduate academic programs in the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 15 graduate programs through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Brennan School of Business, the School of Education, the Graduate School of Social Work, and the School of Leadership and Continuing Studies. In the 2008 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the tenth consecutive year.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
