Batavia Student Receives Dominican University’s Rising Star Award
Taylor Eshleman, a resident of Batavia, has been awarded Dominican University’s Rising Star Award for demonstrating true Dominican spirit through service activities on and off campus.
For the past three years, Eshleman has been an officer of Students Exploring Rewarding Volunteer Experiences (SERVE). Currently SERVE’s president, she has organized the End-of-Year Clothing Drive, Trick or Treat for Canned Goods, and the Adopt a Soldier Program which, in its first year, created 100 care packages for Americans serving overseas. She also helps run the university’s Adopt a Kid Christmas Program, which provides Christmas gifts for 300 needy Chicago-area children.
In addition to working in SERVE, Eshleman has given her time and talents to DU Cares Service Day by distributing food to homeless people, and participated in Alternative Spring Break. Treasurer of the Resident Student Association and head of its community service committee, she hosted their second annual Battle of the Bands Concert, raising $700 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She participated in the university’s winter break service trip to Battle Creek, MI where she repaired homes through Habitat for Humanity. She was also a long-time volunteer with the Girl Scouts.
Eshleman will graduate in 2009 with a degree in natural science and a minor in nutrition.
Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution

Library and Information Science, the Brennan School of Business, the School of Education, the
Graduate School of Social Work, and the School of Leadership and Continuing Studies. In the 2008
issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in
the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the tenth consecutive
year.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
