Albany Park Student Receives Dominican University Service, Academic Awards
Margaret Truppa, a resident of Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood, has been awarded Dominican University’s Outstanding Service Leadership Award for service to Dominican University and the larger community. Truppa graduated in May with a degree in business administration and economics and a minor in accounting.
In addition, Truppa was named the Distinguished Senior in Business Administration. Distinguished Senior awards, selected by academic department, are given to one graduating senior in each major field who has demonstrated a distinctive and unusually strong level of academic achievement.
Truppa served as president of Dominican’s Advancing in Business and Economic Leadership (ABEL) organization and organized and participated in fundraising activities for UNICEF and the Rice Bowl Foundation, among others.
Off campus, Truppa has been an active volunteer at St. Cyprian’s School. She participated in the school’s Junior Achievement program, designed to teach grade school children the basic principles of economics and business. She was guest lecturer and host of the school’s Medieval Faire, giving speeches on medieval lifestyle, art and culture, making period costumes, and coordinating medieval arts and crafts projects. She also undertook a year-long project with St. Cyprian’s pen pal program to foster awareness of the plight of children in South Africa, working with her advisor to develop lesson plans, poster boards, worksheets and games for South African grade school students.
Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution
offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dominican offers 50 undergraduate academic programs in
the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 15 graduate programs through the Graduate School of
Library and Information Science, the Brennan School of Business, the School of Education, the
Graduate School of Social Work, and the School of Leadership and Continuing Studies. In the 2008
issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in
the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the tenth consecutive
year.
“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
