Dominican University Presents “The American Beauty Project”
Dominican University’s performing arts center will present “The American Beauty Project,” a
tribute concert to the Grateful Dead’s critically acclaimed and perennially popular Workingman’s
Dead and American Beauty albums, on Saturday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Lund Auditorium, 7900 W.
Division St., River Forest. The remarkable collection of diverse artists featured in this exclusive
Chicago-area performance include Jim Lauderdale, Ollabelle, Larry Campbell, Teresa Williams and
Catherine Russell.
The Grateful Dead released the two seminal albums in 1970, displaying a surprising new style of organic, country-inflected rock and lyrical references to Steinbeck, provocative blues standards and the Book of Psalms. Workingman’s Dead finds a spare beauty and joy in songs like “Uncle John’s Band” and “Casey Jones.” American Beauty reaches free-wheeling perfection in “Friend of the Devil,” “Sugar Magnolia” and “Truckin’.” Considered masterpieces, both albums rank in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums.
An all-star lineup of musicians is re-interpreting this work for this special concert. Winner of the 2008 Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album for The Bluegrass Diaries, Lauderdale is a multitalented singer and songwriter. Ollabelle, a New York-based quintet, draws on gospel, blues, bluegrass and country influences while sharing vocal and songwriting duties. Larry Campbell moves effortlessly between folk, rock, blues and country music, playing guitar (including a long stint in Bob Dylan’s band), mandolin, fiddle and more. He produced the acclaimed Dirt Farmer, Levon Helm’s new album, and is a featured member of Helm’s band. (Singing back-up on the album is Levon’s daughter, Amy Helm, a member of Ollabelle, and rock/country vocalist Teresa Williams.) Former Deadhead and longtime back-up singer for a host of popular musicians, Russell combines a rootsy mix of blues, swing and jazz. Her recent solo albums have drawn raves.
Tickets for this concert are $43 and $33. For more information or to order tickets, call the Dominican University box office at (708) 488-5000 or visit www.dom.edu/pac.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
