GSLIS Distinguished Alumna Receives International Honor

Dorothy In-Lan Wang Li, a Chicago resident, has been honored by the People’s Republic of China for her contributions and dedication to China’s social and economic development. She was presented with the Friendship Award and was hosted at a state dinner in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing in late September.

A graduate of Dominican University’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) and Brennan School of Business, Li earned a law degree from National Taiwan University before immigrating to the United States. She received Dominican’s GSLIS Outstanding Alumni Award in 1995.

Currently the co-executive director of the Asian Alliance Program at Chicago’s John Marshall Law School, Li was one of six Americans, among 50 international recipients, to receive the 2007 Friendship Award. Established in 1991, the award has been presented to 899 experts from 56 countries. Li was recognized for her work in organizing John Marshall’s outreach program in Asia. She was nominated by China’s State Intellectual Property Office, an agency that handles all of China’s patent and trademark approvals. Her nomination was reviewed by China’s State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs and authorized by the People’s Republic of China.

Founded in 1901, Dominican University is a comprehensive, coeducational Catholic institution offering bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dominican offers 50 undergraduate academic programs in the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences and 15 graduate programs through the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, the Brennan School of Business, the School of Education, the Graduate School of Social Work, and the School of Leadership and Continuing Studies. In the 2008 issue of America’s Best Colleges, U.S. News & World Report again ranked Dominican University in the top tier of Midwest master’s level universities and as a “best value” for the tenth consecutive year.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
