Dominican Presents Hispanic Heritage Month Lecture
Dr. Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, professor of sociology at Duke University, will present a lecture
titled “Señor, Señor, Aren’t We ALL Americans?: Racial Politics in a Latin America-Like America” as
part of Dominican University’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The lecture will be given on
Tuesday, October 23 from 2:20 – 3:30 p.m. in the Martin Recital Hall in the Fine Arts Building,
7900 West Division Street.
Bonilla-Silva will address the rapid racial changes in our society and how this racial stratification is mutating our country. He will discuss his belief that in the near future, America's demography will acquire a pluralistic character featuring three racial strata which he ahs described as "whites," "honorary whites," and "the collective black."
Bonilla-Silva gained media attention with his groundbreaking 1997 article in the American Sociological Review titled “Rethinking Racism: Toward a Structural Interpretation.” Bonilla-Silva’s book, White Supremacy and Racism in the Post-Civil Rights Era, received the American Sociological Association’s 2002 Oliver Cox Award. His research has appeared in several journals such as the American Sociological Review, Sociological Inquiry and the Journal of Latin American Studies. He is currently working on two books: Anything but Racism: How Social Scientists Minimize the Significance of Racism and White Logic, White Methods: Racism and Methodology. In addition, he is working on a project examining the characteristics of the emerging racial order in the U.S. provisionally titled, “We are all Americans: The Latin Americanization of Racial Stratification in the USA.”
