DU Hosts Multimedia Exhibit on Darfur, Africa

Dominican University will host on Thursday, November 8 a multimedia exhibit of digital photos by internationally acclaimed photojournalists of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the war-torn region of Darfur, Africa. The digital photos will be shown on continuous loop between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. in the university’s Social Hall, 7900 W. Division Street, River Forest.

The exhibit, which has been organized by the nonprofit organization Darfur/Darfur, will culminate with a candlelight prayer vigil at 7:30 p.m. in the university’s quadrangle. Refreshments will be provided by Chicago’s Pine Avenue Presbyterian Church following the vigil. Educational materials on the tragedy in Darfur, as well as information on suggested action items, will be available throughout the day.

More than 200,000 people are estimated to have been killed and at least 2 million displaced from their homes in Darfur since fighting broke out in 2003 between the government of Sudan, allied militia forces and other armed rebel groups. The United Nations and a network of nongovernmental organizations are leading the largest humanitarian relief effort in history to assist the approximately 4.2 million people in need of aid due to the Darfur crisis. The responsibility for providing security in the region has been left to an undermanned contingent of African Union peacekeepers.

“As a student I wanted an intimate community. As an aspiring journalist I wanted a big city. Dominican gave me both—and so much more.”
